Recruiting for Green Corps team

05 Dec, 2001 08:20 AM
Recruitment is now being undertaken for a new Green Corps project to be located in Braidwood. The project will commence on January 21, 2002 and will target some of Braidwood’s priority environmental issues. This new team will build on the work completed by previous Green Corps teams in the area.

Ten young people participate in the project and to be eligible, participants must be aged between 17 and 20. Green Corps projects are of 26 week duration and include six weeks accredited training together with twenty weeks of ‘hands on’ environmental activities.

The Braidwood Granites comprises of 40,000 hectares of cleared grazing land of which less than 100 hectares remains as remnant bush. This project will involve extensive revegetation using local native species and the fencing of rocky knobs for planting. This will help reduce the erosion and also create wildlife corridors.

Green Corps is an exciting environmental program giving young Australians the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to their local environment and gain accredited training in a wide range of skills. Whether they are unemployed, school leavers, or tertiary students seeking practical experience, Green Corps can be an excellent stepping stone towards a variety of career paths. Green Corps is managed on behalf of the Commonwealth Government by Australia’s leading conservation Organisation, Conservation Volunteers Australia.

Each Green Corps placement is for six months and Corps Members receive a training allowance of approximately $176-$298 per week.

Anyone interested in joining Green Corps can call Freecall 1800 633 844 or contact Julia Strang at the Canberra Office of Conservation Volunteers Australia on (02) 6247 7770.

Alternatively, visit the Green Corps web site at www.greencorps.org.au.
