SCA joins forces with police to stop illegal access

31 Jan, 2012 10:54 AM
The Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA) is joining forces with NSW Police to clamp down on illegal access in the Braidwood district.

SCA Group General Manager Operations Fiona Smith said there had been an increase in illegal activities in the area around Braidwood over the past few months.

“The SCA owns and leases agricultural and bushland areas within the Goulburn-Mulwaree and Palerang local government areas,” Ms Smith said.

“The SCA’s role is to manage and protect this land from degradation and we take illegal access activities very seriously.

“Trail bike riding and 4WD vehicles can have a detrimental effect on water quality because of the significant erosion problems they cause, which have been identified on some of the remedial works already undertaken on SCA-owned land.

“People caught on SCA property are committing offences against the Enclosed Lands Protection Act and face fines of up to $550.

“In addition to trespassing, if people are hunting or damaging property, further fines may be imposed or legal proceedings instigated.

“The SCA is working closely with NSW Police to ensure these areas remain protected.”

Ms Smith said recent illegal activities included trail bike riding and hunting, theft and damage to SCA fences and gates.

“As well as working with NSW Police we’re asking the local community to help us control malicious damage and illegal hunting on SCA properties within the Braidwood district,” Ms Smith said.

“If anyone sees any illegal activity, please report it to Braidwood Police on 02 4842 2101, Monaro Rural Crime on 02 6298 0581 or the SCA Incident number 1800 061 069.”
