Sculptures by the Lake spread their wings

The $220 million project can be seen from the Federal Highway across the lake or briefly from the Kings Highway as you get toward Bungendore. This week the first of the generators and blades will be lifted onto the towers with a 600 tonne crane. The wind farm will span 10 kilometres from north to south and about six kilometres from east to west when it is complete.

The 80m tall towers will have blades of 88 metres in diameter that will bring the total height to 124m.

The towers must be sturdy enough to withstand wind gusts of up to 210 kilometres per hour. In total over 6,500 tonnes of steel will be used in the construction.

It is estimated that during its 25 year service life the wind farm will supply clean electricity for up to 90,000 households, which is equal to a decrease of greenhouse gas emissions by around 400,000 tonnes per year.

Heavy haulage vehicles will continue to transport the sections through Goulburn past Woodlawn Mine and then left on to Taylors Creek Road. The construction is due to be completed by March next year.
