Local Ellen Simpson has been made a Landmark Ambassador in the recent 2007 Landfall Angus Youth National Roundup, encouraging young people into the beef industry.
Ellen is the daughter of Ros and Grant Simpson of Coolong at Charleys Forest and is in year 11 at Yanco Agricultural High School at Leeton.
The roundup was held from January 11 to 14 at the Glen Innes Showground. The event was originally scheduled to be held at Armidale, NSW but had to be moved after a severe hailstorm just before Christmas caused major damage to that city's Livestock Exhibition Centre.
Just over 120 young beef enthusiasts aged between 8 and 25 from around Australia - as well as one participant from New Zealand - attended the roundup, participating in interactive beef industry sessions as well as junior judging and parading competitions.
As always, a highlight of the Landfall Angus Youth National Roundup is the presentation of a number of major awards - this year a clean sweep to NSW.
Stuart Hobbs, Molong, is now the proud owner of a stud heifer from Te Mania Angus after being announced the winner of the Te Mania Most Potential Breeder Encouragement Award. Scott Henry, Walcha, is headed for South Australia after receiving the PJ Cattle Co SA Junior Heifer Expo Award. Kate Tickle, Dungog, is also travelling, headed for NZ as the Angus Youth Australia New Zealand Exchange.
Kate will also continue on as a Landmark Ambassador for her second year, together with Josee Sergi, Urila. New Landmark Ambassadors for 2007 are Ellen Simpson, Braidwood; Shelley Piper, Caroona; Zac McInerney, Tumbi; Eliza Newcombe, Armidale; Scott Viski, West Pennant Hills.
While awards such as these are important, the primary goal of organisers was to successfully combine education and enjoyment for all participants.
Angus Youth member and roundup coordinator Eliza Redden said she hoped the roundup would make participants 'more excited and interested about pursuing a career in the beef industry'. Ms Redden also said she thought the roundup provided a valuable opportunity to young people interested in the beef industry.
