Sixth Annual Members Show to BRAG about

02 May, 2008 10:49 AM
The strengths of the local arts community were revealed once again with the opening of the sixth Annual Members' Exhibition of Braidwood Regional Arts Group (BRAG). The National Theatre was thronged with arts practitioners and enthusiasts to welcome Dr Mike Kelly MP and Mrs Kelly to the opening of the four-day event.

In his speech, Mike Kelly stressed the importance of the arts to society. "Artists' he said "Help to define who we are. Art reveals the things we can't put into words" He was proud that he had been able to secure grant funding towards the Community Arts Centre Appeal and hoped the final total would soon be reached. He was particularly glad to see that one of the exhibited works focused on 'Sorry Day'. It was wonderful to be there in Parliament and take part in that important and moving day. It had been one of the most memorable and joyous days of his life. Dr Kelly also praised the strong community spirit found in Braidwood and pledged he would do all he could to help keep that spirit alive and well.

Welcoming everyone BRAG's President, Gill Burke, drew attention to the inclusive nature of the organisation.. Not all members were arts practitioners', - anyone with an enthusiasm for the arts could join BRAG. She warmly thanked Sandra Fisher, Sandra Hand and Judit Kovacs who, together with BRAG's Patron Solvig Baas Becking, had hung this varied and complex exhibition. She also called for a cheer for Don Raper who had so generously donated his fine burl and wrought iron table to be the raffle prize.
