Stage two of Braidwood's new Flood Creek footpath is nearing completion. This section of the work has involved extending the existing path (stage one) onto the Braidwood Common and creating a path on the northern side of the creek down the hill from the end of Garvey Street. Future stages will see a footbridge placed across Flood Creek and cement sections of path constructed on either side to complete the public walking link from Garvey Street through to Archer Bridge.
This latest section has been completed with a great deal of volunteer labour and some good-natured and community-spirited cooperation between Mr Stan Thistleton (as lessee of the Braidwood Common), Palerang Council and the Braidwood Urban Landcare Group (BULG).
Flood Creek works have so far included: stabilisation and access improvements to the horse crossing to Hassall's Reserve; planting of native species and creation of a new recreation area close to the creek; fencing of a new publicly-accessible section of the Braidwood Common; and construction of over 500 meters of new public path beside Flood Creek and up to Garvey St.
Partners to the Flood Creek project so far, include the Braidwood Urban Landcare Group, Palerang Council, The Land and Property Management Authority, The Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority, The Sydney Catchment Authority and Greater Southern Area Health. BULG would like to acknowledge the invaluable support of Landmark Daniel Walker and Braidwood Rural and Building Supplies. They would also like to thank the Vardanega boys (including that big grey-haired Vardanega boy) for their earthmoving expertise, patient communication and supportive attitude towards the project.
On Sunday March 7th there will be another working bee on the Flood Creek path. BULG will be completing the final stage of shaping and wacker-packing the granite path and stabilising the soil beside it where needed. Volunteers will be very welcome to come and help with a variety of tasks many of which will involve a rake. BULG also hopes to remove the old eastern boundary fence on this day but would remind Braidwood residents that the path will not be complete until council has been able to install the footbridge and the connecting cement path sections have been completed.
Please join us on March 7th. Bring appropriate sun protection, sturdy shoes and ample drinking water. Any hand-tools (rakes and shovels) that you can easily bring along may come in handy. We'll be on site from reasonably early until around 1pm. We'll start on the Garvey Street side and move round to the Bombay Road side later on. For further information please call Kate Park (48422485) Donna Hazell (48422767), or Ben Gleeson (48422679) from the Braidwood Urban Landcare Group.
