Students Caitlin Maher, Andrew Callan, Rachel Farley and Grace Dickinson from Braidwood Central School were all vocal and intelligent participants of Mike Kelly's 2020 youth summit held at Monaro High School in Cooma last Thursday. Speaking up on issues such as student representation in decision making, public transport, and job creation in rural areas, these BCS students demonstrated an aptitude for political thinking and policy creation which, if their ideas are listened to, will ensure a brighter future for all.
Sixty students from 14 of the other 19 Eden-Monaro senior schools identified the main issues for youth in regional Australia at the 2020 Youth Summit.
These were public transport, accessing tertiary education, meeting the recreational and activities needs of youth in regional Australia, mental health and the importance of raising community awareness on climate change and renewable energy.
The Member for Eden-Monaro Mike Kelly said the students discussed how they would like Australia to be in 12 years' time.
"These very bright students have a major stake in the kind of Australia that develops by 2020," Dr Kelly said. "They will then be the current young adults and parents. This means they will be among the most affected by how Australia develops.
"As participants, they made some very worthwhile suggestions, especially on how school groups could be used to get communities involved in these issues. They identified events and activities to promote action at both the individual and community levels.
"Another very positive outcome was the theme of networking the school student representative Councils (SRCs)."
Dr Kelly said he had been very impressed as he listened through the various sessions of group discussions and their wrap up at the end of the day.
"I must say their concepts for getting communities more involved in promoting cultural activities such as musical events and other regional entertainment opportunities were terrific" he said.
"We have forwarded their ideas and suggestions to the Minister for Youth and Sport Kate Ellis, to be included in the National Youth 2020 Summit this weekend (April 12/13).
Students travelled from Moruya, Narooma, and Eden on the coast and from Jindabyne, Tumut and Braidwood to attend the 2020 Summit
