Students' sculpture shines in Sydney

Cody attended the Sheetmetal Industry Association Gala Dinner along with other finalists from Braidwood Jethro Chinnery from year 11 and Dylan Radburn year 10, and their families. The 2008 Sheetmetal Association 'Sculptor Of The Year Awards' were held at the Sydney Convention Centre, Darling Harbour.

The metal sculptures have been produced in the elective sculpture program run by Braidwood artists Suzi Bleach at the school.

The finalists' sculptures had been on exhibition at the convention centre for the past week. Other entrants came from Bellingen High School, Blue Mountains Grammar School, Mulwaree High School, Walcha High School, Knox Grammar school and the Hills Grammar School.

On the morning of the last day of the exhibition, Friday May 30th a sculpture launch was held to honour the student finalists and their schools. An address was given by Maria Vamvakinou MP, (Chair of the House of Representatives Standing Committee On Industry, Science And Innovation) and the panel of judges.

Following the launch, the final round of judging occurred by a panel of judges; Mr Ron Robertson-Swann, renowned Australian sculptor and lecturer, Mr Geoff Ireland, Head of Studies National Art School, and Director of NSW Industries Group, Mr Mark Goodsell.

The ultimate winners of the event were announced that evening at the annual Sheetmetal Industry Association Gala Dinner Awards Ceremony.

The quality of work entered in the competition was of a very high standard and the judges would have had a hard time choosing the winners. The junior category was won by Cody Moran. She has won $1000 for herself and $1000 for the school. Later in the evening the sculptures were auctioned and the students raised $3,900 for the sculpture program. 10% of the money will be donated to Northcott disability service.

BCS students received a lot of praise for their work and the event has opened up new opportunities for vocational pathways. The students are now entered into the WorldSkills National Competition held at Darling Harbour in July.
