 Tennis gets a lift

Tennis gets a lift

28 Nov, 2001 08:12 AM
Nerriga Progress and Sporting Association members were pleased to be able to hold a round robin tennis tournament on Saturday November 17, 2001 to celebrate the refurbished tennis courts on the village sports ground.

The tennis courts were refurbished with a grant from the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation on a dollar for dollar basis. This project was undertaken by the Association along with residents and friends of the village, and could not have been completed without the support and voluntary labour of a huge number of people.

Members of the Association acknowledge and thank all who have made the upgrade of the tennis courts a reality.

The tennis courts were first built in the mid 1920's, Jim Duffy, the school teacher at the time coached interested children. Many tournaments were held between the Corang Tennis Club and Nerriga Village in the early years.

In 1946 the Tallaganda Shire Council upgraded the courts, aided by local voluntary labour.

In 1956-7 the tennis club was very strong with 46 members, 11 of them being juniors. In those days a dozen tennis balls cost two pounds and 14 shillings, or in todayís terms $5.40.

In this period Braidwood Tennis Club commenced their district competition. This competition consisted of teams from Braidwood, Majors Creek, Corang and Nerriga. When the two local teams competed it was always a fierce battle!

Matches were played nearly every Sunday, either at home or away. The team(s) travelled to Huskisson, Wandandean, Milton, Windellama, Sandy Point, Jackwar, Tarago, Bungendore, Braidwood, Captains Flat, Araluen, Majors Creek, Charleys Forest and Roslyn.

In 1966 the Nerriga Club went in to recession, and the elements took their toll - the fence fell down and the roof of the tennis club shed blew off.

In 1982 there was enough interest once again in the village for the tennis club to be reformed, and in 1986, with the help of a grant from the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation, the courts were cleaned up and toilets were built. This was also on a dollar for dollar basis and lots of local voluntary labour.

More than 80 people attended the sports ground on Saturday November 17, this time 28 were participants in the round robin played on the new synthetic surface. (We believe this might be the first in the Shire?) Others attended to meet up with friends and relations and to enjoy the 'village' atmosphere.

The formal opening was performed by Colin Miles, Coordinator of the NSW Sport and Recreation Department, South Coast Regional Office, Wollongong, representing the Minister John Watkins who was unable to attend.

Tennis continued until 5pm and was followed by 'open' tennis ending with a sausage sizzle in the evening.

Thank you to all you who attended our tennis day, it is likely to become an annual event.

Winners of the round robin: Ladies - Sandra South. Gentlemen - Andrew Perks.
