The Afghan

05 Dec, 2001 08:21 AM
Shazia is a young girl from Afghanistan. Her parents were killed by the Taliban and her home burnt down before her eyes. She is now living in a refugee camp in Pakistan. Shazia does not know where her four brothers and sisters are, or even if they are alive. She cries continually, and is so grief stricken that she cannot eat even though she is starving.

With Aid organisations stretched to their limit, thousands of Afghan children are starving. One in four Afghan children do not live to see their fifth birthday. Every week more and more children arrive at the International Womenís Children Support Service in Pakistan clamouring for bread.

In Australia one representative of this support service, an Afghan woman named Mahbooba, is raising money to feed the many orphans of the Afghanistan war. All funds donated go directly to the children in the camps.

On Saturday December 15, a stall will be held at the Braidwood market to raise money for the Afghan childrenís appeal. On sale will be homemade cakes, ice cream, jams, chutneys, plants, bric-a-brac etc, kindly made and donated by Braidwood residents and businesses. Two raffles will be drawn, with many wonderful prizes, including works donated by local artists, Helen Gier, Richard Murray and Annie Storey. Childrenís activities and entertainment will be provided.

Saleable items (not clothes) are still being sought and any donations can be dropped off at 96 Lascelles Street, Braidwood. Please come along and make the appeal a fantastic success.
