I would like to thank the CWA and the local council for enabling Lifeforce to come to Braidwood recently and present the seminar on Suicide Prevention. It was disappointing to see such little interest from the community and to realise that many people are either unaware or disinterested in the affects of this "Secret Killer".
This is a very difficult and emotional subject to address, and yet the statistics indicate that more people die from suicide than from motor accidents in Australia. This seminar opened up a subject, which should be of great concern to our community that is far from exempt, from the terrible devastation of suicide.
There are programs being established all over the country to try to address the problems of both suicide and depression, which may not always be connected. This leads me to ask: What action can we take as a community? How successful are those services already I place? Are people in our community judged or considered weak if they find themselves unable to cope in some circumstances? What do we do to ensure that no one is alienated or penalised in our community? It seems to me that much more discussion is needed about this subject to try and see what each one of us might do to ensure that we do all that we can to eliminate suicide from our district.
