The Sonar Radars are a dynamic and unique local band. The core band members Anders Nielsen, Karuna Bajracharya, Surya Bajracharya and Kahl Hopper have grown up in and been part of Braidwood’s thriving artistic community since their days at B.C.S. The boys have been busy with their latest creative endeavour, creating a fresh new instrumental score for the godfather of silent cinema, “Intolerance” (1916).
Through winning a place in the Adelaide-based Silent ReMasters program in 2006, the Sonar Radars have performed their new film score at the 2007 Adelaide Film Festival and at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.
On their group dynamics, drummer Kahl Hopper says: “a large part of our music is improvisation and an unspoken connection which has developed from so many years jamming together for hours on end. The idea of the music is like a bird, we are all trying to catch that idea which is a constant moving target. The result is four sound patterns through space but we never pin the idea, or catch the bird. And that’s the success of the sound. It’s like if something stops moving it dies, the music is like that… when we play music we are creatures swimming in the depths, using only sonar to find each other.”
Playing together for more than ten years under various guises, the four boys from Braidwood have graced the stages of National festivals Homebake, Livid, and Splendor in The Grass, and toured the UK appearing in a BBC 1 Showcase.
Having supported Radiohead, N.E.R.D and Death In Vegas, and featured in the revered Rolling Stone Magazine together, The Sonar Radars are a brand new incarnation of a well-established band that grew up together as mates in Braidwood.
Now under Secret Music Records, the Sonar Radars are bringing it all back home to the National Theatre before heading north to Woodford Folk Festival later this year.
The band proudly perform their original soundtrack to DW Griffiths’ 1916 silent film “Intolerance” on Thurs 25th and Fri 26th October at The National Theatre, 7pm start, $10 entry.
