The two courts have fallen into disrepair and the Majors Creek Progress Association has formed a committee which is in the process of raising funds to complete the project.
Committee member Narelle Watts said the impressive turn-out proved community spirit was alive and well in the village.
“To have so many people turn up to show their support was incredible,” she said.
“Thanks to an influx of new residents and a baby boom out here at The Creek, the population has exploded.
“Restoring the courts will bring them back to their former glory and provide a fantastic social outlet for the growing number of adults and children of the area.”
The two clay courts were constructed in the 1950s and officially opened by Member for Eden Monaro, the Honorable JW Seiffert, in August 1955.
Progress Association president Brian McDonald, who attended last week’s gathering with a racquet he won at the tournament to mark the courts’ opening, helped build the courts as a teenager.
He recalled the days when the courts were the scene of fierce local competitions and leisurely weekend picnics.
“The Majors Creek Tennis Club competed in the district competition; Saturday afternoon saw the locals playing friendly tennis and on Wednesdays the ladies would play with a prize for best on the day, the prize usually being a cup and saucer,” Mr McDonald said.
The committee has secured funds from Cortona Resources and is currently applying for grants to make the project a reality.
