Volunteers Recognised at Landcare Awards

28 Mar, 2007 08:57 AM
About 90 Landcare volunteers attended the Annual Landcare Awards dinner at Garan Vale Woolshed last Saturday evening, hosted by the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority and the Upper Shoalhaven Landcare Council.

The night included invited speakers Gerry Gillespie who spoke about soils and system design (soil carbon) and Roger Hosking who talked about climate change in Braidwood.

The following Landcare members and groups were recognised for their exceptional efforts in the Landcare field over the past year. They were:

* Landcare group Award - Windellama Landcare Group;

* Landcare Project - Upper Deua Catchment Community Landcare Group for Araluen Creek Stream Bed Control Phase 4;

* New Group Encouragement Award - Sheep Station Creek Landcare Group

* Landcare and Government Partnership Award - Nerriga Landcare Group for the Corang River Riparian Rehabilitation Project jointly supported by Sydney Catchment Authority, National Parks and Wildlife Service (Biodiversity Conservation Section), Rural Lands Protection Board (Braidwood) and NSW Dept. Lands (Goulburn);

* Landcare Individual - Merv Cornish for over a decade of sustained dedication to Landcare projects in the Windellama area;

* Landcare Education/School Award - Braidwood Central School for supplying native plants for use in revegetation across the district over many years, and;

* Carina Clarke Perpetual Plaque for Landcare Excellence - Kevin Cooper of Inverary Creek Landcare Group for his tireless efforts over many years to treat gully erosion, salinity, degraded landscapes and numerous farm forestry projects using native and pine trees.

These Landcare awardees will be nominated for the Regional Landcare Awards and could be in the running for a State Landcare Award later in the year.

Many thanks to sponsors Landmark Daniel and Walker, Braidwood Rural and Building Supplies, Foodworks Braidwood and the Windellama Landcare Group and, of course, to all the Landcare volunteers that make such a huge difference towards sustainable and healthy landscapes throughout the Upper Shoalhaven and Upper Deua catchments.
