The Indonesian Government Officers visited Palerang as part of a training program in regional economic development arranged by AusAid within Australia's aid program to Indonesia. The six-week program consists of two weeks' training in regional economic development issues and training techniques in each of three locations, followed by a two weeks' study tour of Australia. The officers then undergo further training and development in Indonesia to complete the program.
They are graduate government officers working in trade, agriculture, fisheries, tourism and cooperatives in their province. The focus of the program is on home-based or cottage industries, generally in areas related to value adding for agricultural, farm or tourism products.
The visit was facilitated by Cheryl Raper of Braidwood & Villages Tourism & Mrs Debbie Ferguson from Palerang Council. Palerang Council's Strategic Planner Mr John Wright also addressed the group, before Cheryl lead them on a tour of The Sugden Hamilton Pottery, Dojo Bakery, The Boiled Lolly, the newly opened Old Cheese Factory at Reidsdale, and The Silken Tent.
A number of questions from the officers focused on the interaction between the three tiers of government in Australia and the availability of funding provided by the different governments. Feedback about the day was very positive from all members, who were very appreciative of the opportunity to visit a broad range of successful businesses in Palerang. The visitors all felt that they could take back some great ideas to their Indonesian villages. On their way back to Canberra, the party also visited Woodworks in Bungendore.
