On Saturday January 21st, the cast of "Briar Rose" assembled at New Dimensions Hair in Park Lane to receive expert make-up and hair styling advice from Kath Faishney and Cara McMurtrie. It was an unusual and, at times, hilarious gig for Kath and Cara, who were asked to advise on characters with the unlikely names of Wisdom, Courage, the Frog and the Wicked Fairy!
Director Jane Ahlquist did not want an obvious "painted on" make-up, despite the fairytale nature of the characters.
"The purpose of make-up is to bring out what is already there, not to impose a character", she says. "Stage make-up is not a mask – it enhances the performer's interpretation of the role."
The cast ended up with clearly defined, sharp features and glittered hair that can be arranged into character with one sweep of the hand. The Frog has a King Neptune beard streaked with vibrant green and all the faces are subtly glossed to shine under stage lighting.
"It was generous of Kath and Cara to educate the cast in this way and to organize our products for us," Jane concluded. "I think everyone is feeling the part at last."
"Briar Rose" opens on March 18th for three performances. Bookings and enquiries can be made by telephoning 4846 1288. Kath and Cara can be contacted at New Dimensions on 4842 1777.
