Royds Scores? Redbacks Rejoice

RUGBY UNION

No your not seeing things, no its not a typo, what you have just read has already become part of rugby folklore. A tale to be told to youngsters around the fireside for centuries to come. There isn't really a great deal more that can be said about Saturday's game, that pretty much sums up eighty minutes of footy there.

With a few new faces and a full interchange bench our boys were inspired by the crushing victory from the Bears earlier in the afternoon. Welcomed onto the field by our league counterparts in a show of mateship and community spirit, a positive feeling permeated Braidwoods ranks on and off the field. The first half took off at a furious pace, both the Braidwood and Ulladulla forward packs testing each others worth. Some solid defense and cleaning out from Paul Fuz put us in good position to attack, Gordon Waters and Sam Lyons driving on to gain countless valuable metres. Good clean balls from Matt Cairns gave the backline the time and space necessary to spread the ball and outmatch their opponents. It wasn't long before Bryce McMurtrie, looking dangerous all day, was to score in the corner.

Keeping the pressure on, Braidwood's forwards once again steam rolled toward the line, from twenty out the ball went wide again, Mick Nurmi taking a hit and still managing to put Jacob Kain into a gap who then proceeded to crash through at least seventeen men and over the line for his first try.

A solid first twenty minutes and a couple of tries under the belt, the Redbacks did begin to tire. Some sloppy defense and a distinct lack of fitness saw Ulladulla return with points on the board.

Although the opposition had been let back in the door, safe hands at the back with Nick Black and Tim Moffat plucking towering kicks from the air and returning with gusto kept us in good stead. Braidwood fought on with Bryce crossing for his second late in the half leaving the score something like 15 -10 in our direction.

The talk at half time was simple, pick up the defense and back each other up. Returning to the field the Redbacks came out firing, Scoring in the corner only 30 seconds after the kick. The remainder of the second half went along the same lines as the first, our forwards stepped up another gear, with a powerful scrum and continually driving on creating room for the backs. Once again the Redbacks lineout was spectacular, Steve Northcott placing the ball with surgical precision, unfortunately not cleaning up valuable steals quite as neatly.

Not to be out done by his inside man Chris Bowie crossed for his first not long before a fairly soft effort from Matty Cairns saw another five pointer making six for the Redbacks in total. Craig Coe unlucky enough to have two disallowed.

Ulladulla managed to run in one last try late in the game leaving the final score 30 - 17 to Braidwood. A hard match, but training and perseverance had paid off for our boys. With a few details to fine tune (namely a goal kicker with the Redbacks missing 21 points in conversions) the rest of the season looks promising.

The Royal Mail players player this week was Bryce McMurtrie, Foodworks 3 points also went to Bryce. Tallaganda Service station 2 points was shared by Chris Moffat and Jacob Kain. Braidwood Earthmoving 1 point this week was Komatsu Lyons. Next weeks sees a bye due to the Bay seconds folding, with Broulee hosting Braidwood the Following week. As always training is Monday and Thursday evenings at 6:30, everyone is welcome. Yours in Rugby, Whitey.
