 BEARS’ BIG WIN

BEARS’ BIG WIN

23 Jul, 2009 02:56 PM
28-0 was the halftime score and the Bears racked up 13 tries in an excellent display of Rugby League. The Bears backline showed their class running in 11 of the 14 tries after the forwards had laid the solid platform up the middle. Captain Matt McCarthy crashed over for the 1st try in the 2nd minute of the game and this set the trend right up till 3 minutes from the final siren when halfback Paul Stuart backed up another Bears attacking raid to seal the Bears win.

Stuart produced his best game of the season to date, he constantly set up his outside backs with precision passes, kept his forwards on the move and along with his halves partner Piggy Guihot had the Highlanders defence bamboozled all game. When Marty Edwards was sin-binned Paul made the next 5 tackles in a row with venom which kept the momentum of the match with the Bears. His efforts earned him the Landmark Daniel Walker Players Player Award. Stevie Newsome picked up 2nd place with his trademark display from fullback. Steve scored 3 classic tries chiming into the backline at pace leaving the Highlanders defence in his wake on his way to the tryline. He came up into the Bears’ defensive line as required and constantly encouraged the Bears’ attack and defence with 'constructive talk' from fullback. Big Brent 'Buz ' McGlone made the most of his time on the paddock, charging into the Highlanders’ defence - sometimes twice in a set of 6. tackles - pulled off some big hits in defence and deservedly picked up the Coaches Award. Thanks to Richard Walker from Landmark Daniel Walker for his generous support and Game Day Sponsorship.

The Bears also got through the match with only Adam Dixon picking up a minor corked thigh and Tod Wyburn and Brent Backhouse made successful returns to the paddock from injury. The coach was really pleased with the whole team’s performance in such windy conditions. The Bears had a bye last weekend and will front up to the Harman Seadogs at Harman on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Proths Pick-a-Bear didn’t go off and now jackpots to $1200 for the Harman game.

The Bruce Stuart Score Board for rd 11 Bears 68 (Newsome 3 tries, Lane 2 McCarthy 2, Dixon 1, Guihot 2, Hacker 1, Heycox 1,Stuart 1 and McCarthy 7 conversions, Wyburn 1.)
