The Braidwood Servicemen's Club Bears were defeated by last year's Premiers, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 66-6 on Saturday.
The Bears put up a real fight till just before half time, holding the Premiers to a 18 -6 lead, but once again succumbing to serious injuries to Captain Marty Edwards, his centre partner Damien Bigg and flying winger Rob Gara, the Bears had no answer to to the Bushrangers ion the second half, who racked up 48 unanswered points.
The Bears cause wasn't helped with only having three players on their reserve bench with Tuggeranong having six. The loyal band of supporters who travelled to Tuggeranong to cheer on the Bears were treated to a really gutsy courageous effort by the tour boys who never stopped trying for the entire match.
Game Day sponsor was OLYRED Building. OLYRED's principle Steve Orford would have been proud of his winner of the Players Player Award Mark Piper, who plays a similar game to that he played in the 70s and 80s.
Piper, carrying a dicky knee, has been consistent since round one, and on Saturday his form was no different. He made huge ground every time he took the ball up and was punishing in defence.
Rob Gara and hid half "Pig" Guihot tied for second. Rob's game, while only lasting till half time, was tremendous for he continued to come off his wing giving his forwards a spell in attack, making good ground, while making huge hits in defence. Pig Guihot made the mst of his opportunities in attack, consistently making it over the advantage line with deft footwork. His defense was as good as any forwards in the match. Steve Clarke thoroughly deserved the Coaches Award. Clarke carted the ball up constantly every time the Bears had it, plus he worked tirelessly in defence. Clarkie's efforts have been inspirational for his peers. He has only had five minutes spell in the last two games, not bad foe a 34 year old. Mention must be made of Damien Backhouse and Davey Jonas who have played this season, along with Mark Piper, carrying wriggling injuries. Davey scored the Bears only try on the Saturday when he hit a perfect pass from Marty Edwards, split two defenders and carried former Bear Stevie Newsome over the tryline.
Next Saturday the Bears take on last placed Goulburn's Gordon Highlanders at the Rec at 2.30
APEX will have the BBQ fired up. Steven and Adrian Hockey's Graham Hockey Transport is the Game Day Sponsor. The Bears will hopefully have Phill Jonas, Jimmy evans, Wayne Crisp and James "Thumper" Gorman available to boost the injury depleted side.
Brain Drury picked Rob Gara in Proths Pick-a-Bear on Friday night. Gara, Gordon Pender-Seymour or "Pig" Guihot didn't score first on the weekend so now the jackpot will stand at $450 for the game against the Gordon Highlanders.
The Bruce Stewart Scoreboard for Round 3: Tuggeranong Bushrangers 66, Braidwood Bears 6, (Davey Jonas 1 try, Daniel Augustin 1 conversion.)
