The spring competition is almost halfway through so it is time to give you a brief update of proceedings so far.
We have 4 teams competing in the competition, each team consisting of 8 players. After 4 rounds, Rodney's Roses have hit an early lead, followed only a drop volley away by Mick's Marigolds and a couple of topspin lobs away are Fry's Freesias and Phil's Frangipanis. Many of the players have commented on the high quality of play in both A and B grades. The A grade standard in each team is top class, with all players exhausted by the end of the fourth set. With B grade, many sets are finishing well after A grade, showing the closeness of the competition and many long rallies.
The mix of youth and experience is blending well throughout the teams. We have 8 players currently in high school, most of whom have had coaching from Matt McDonald, joining with players who are just a little older. These young players - James Fry, Keely Howard, Emily Malone, Chris Pont, Bob McDougall, Tim Callan, Pat Martin and Bridgette Martin - have shown great enthusiasm and sportsmanship while playing.
So now it is up to the three teams to hit a few more forehand winners against Rodney's Roses who are the form side so far. This team is made up of Murray Smith, Peter Hazell, Rodney Royds, Jo Parsons, Sandra South, Keith and Bob McDougall and Tim Callan.
A reminder that Matt McDonald will be continuing with junior tennis coaching on Sunday mornings commencing 25 October. Contact Matt on 0412 565 137 if you are interested in your child attending these lessons.
