Comets take out senior premiership

28 Sep, 2007 04:44 PM
The Braidwood Rec. ground was looking a picture as the beautiful spring morning greeted Grand Final Day as the 2007 soccer season reached its climax! The kids were keen to play their games and see just who was going to come out on top in season 2007!

There was penalty shoot outs, favourites getting up and the underdogs having victories on what was another day of fantastic football fun!

SUB-JUNIORS

Another small but willing band of subbies had a great warm up and game on the mini field and plenty of good kicks were had by many of the players! Thanks to Cathy Mahoney and Darren Rowley and other parents for picking up the pieces of the subbies over the previous weeks as sickness and absenteeism was rife in the second half of the year!

JUNIORS

Dragonball Z v Yugioh

The top of the table clash couldn’t have been more exciting in what was a thoroughly entertaining game to watch. Both teams have been giving it to each other all season and Yugioh had the final say in their 2-1 victory! However Dragonball Z had the last laugh sealing the premiership last week with a 6 point lead on the ladder and only 1 game to go!

Best for the Dragonball Z were Andrew Barr Harry Evans and Mikaela Clarke and best for Yugioh were Isabella Culmone Will Shoemark and Joel Croxon. Final score Yugioh 2 Dragonball Z 1

Digemon v Pokemon

The Pokemon team have had a tough year but have never given up and were looking at causing an upset on the final day of the season but the Digemon team have been on the improve in the second half of the season and didn’t want to lose their last game. A very close game was played between the 2 teams and either side could have been happy with a draw but the Digemon managed to score a goal and hang on for the victory! Best for Digemon were Josh Story Jessie Lo and Adrian Holcman and best for Pokemon were Lily Morris Nick Asimus and Izak Hilhorst. Final score Digemon 1 Pokemon 0

This left the final positions on the ladder like this:

Position Team P W D L GF GA GD PTS

I would like to thank the coaches David Rush , Jenny Daniher, Thomas Royds and David Hilhorst for all the hard work in keeping these mini soccer dynamo’s on the field and developing their skills along the way! Thanks also to the band of keen referee’s we had for this competition and hopefully they will be keen to follow up on their interest of having the whistle in their hands in the future and get their tickets in Canberra as they come of age. Dylan Crisp, Tom amd Josh Daniher, Zach Collins, Zach Faichney, Luke Hemler, Chris Rajapakshe, Liam McClure and any others I’ve forgotten!

Piranhas v Barracudas

The Piranhas took in a 1-0 lead into the game after their victory last week and the Barracudas would have to keep the Piranhas scoreless and score twice to take fifth spot off the Piranhas. The Piranhas took control early in the game and never looked back as they dominated he field position and score sheet. The Barracudas were valiant in defeat and never gave up but the Piranhas were too strong in the end finishing the game 3-0 and winning on aggregate 4-0. Goal scorers for the Piranhas were Isaac Jullienne Zach Collins and Ty Palmer. Best for the Piranhas were Ty Palmer Charlotte Horan and Tahnee Smithers and best for the Barracudas were Pip Sherriff Melissa Mundy and Kelly Liversidge.

Play off for 3rd

Stingrays v Marlins

This was a classic game of finals football with both teams creating chances as the game went from end to end in a very exciting game. The Stingrays possibly had the better chances to score but twice the ball just wouldn’t get over the line for them as the Marlins scrambling defence was relentless. The Marlins had their own chance to seal the win but for a great save from John Sharp in the Stingrays goal. Full time was blown and the score was 0-0 so 2 halves of 5 minutes of extra time was played and the games intensity had lifted as both teams tried in vain to break the deadlock. try as they may the game ended in a draw and the dreaded penalty shoot out was played to find out who would finish 3rd in the intermediates division. It took 12 shots in a tense finale to the game to find the Stingrays winning 4-3. Best for the Stingrays were John Sharp Tom Daniher and Elizabeth Etcell and best for the Marlins were Will Atkinson Adam Craig and Jai Coleman.

Grand Final

Sharks v Eels

The was an extremely exciting game with the undefeated Sharks under the pump from an Eels team totally committed to spoiling the Sharks season. The action was hectic with both teams creating chances and then break away plays creating chances up the other end almost immediately! Players from both sides showed some fantastic skills in attack and defence as well as in goals as the half time score was locked at 0-0. The second half saw the Sharks slowly start to take control of the game and midway through the second half a brilliant bit of individual play from Angus Bunn saw him give the Sharks the lead and 1 hand on the Premiership. The Eels were running out of steam fast but still created the odd chance to draw level but the defence of the Sharks held firm. The score could have blown out but for some brilliant keeping by the Eels goalkeeper Liam McClure who save 3 or 4 one on one chances and gave his team every opportunity of being in the game if they could score. Time ran out and the Sharks came away with an amazing victory and finished undefeated. Best for the Sharks were Angus Bunn Justin Stubbs and Sarah Hemler and best for the Eels were Liam McClure Keely Howard and Dylan Crisp. Final score Sharks 1 Eels 0

SENIORS

Play off for 3rd

Meteors v Fireballs

The clashes between these 2 sides have been extreme during the season with both sides having big victories against each other and some close games as well, so it was always going to be entertaining. The Meteors opened the scoring early but the Fireballs were creating good chances. The Meteors started to ran out of steam in the second half and the enthusiasm of the Fireballs won them the game with 2 nicely work team goals to Andrew Crisp and Luke Hemler. best for the fireballs were Kaylah Jullienne Amy Liversidge and Luke Hemler and best for the Meteors were Ellyse Sharp Millan Pintos-Lopez and Jess Willding. Final score Fireballs 2 Meteors 1

Grand Final

Asteroids v Comets

The Asteroids were undefeated all season however the last month of football from them has been patchy with only 3 close draws and a narrow victory last week in the semis from a lucky goal from half way. Not good form to take into a Grand Final! The Comets on the other hand have had a good couple of weeks winning their last 2 games and were out to spoil the party for the Asteroids. The game had a good feel about it and in the opening minute of the game the Comets Harley Williams surprised the Asteroids defence and goal keeper with a shot from just outsides the centre circle that catapulted them into the lead. A shell shocked Asteroids team took most of the first half to settle down into a good rhythm and started to play well early in the second half but the Comets defence was determined not to let this one get away from them as many games had during the season. The Comets doubled their lead with around 12 minutes to go and the Asteroids were trying everything they could to get back into the game with shots coming in from all over the place but the Comets hung on and in the end to become the Premiers! Best for the Comets were Harley Williams Thomas Royds and Michael Ison and best for the Asteroids were Olivia Laurie Will Richards and Emily Malone. Finals score Comets 2 Asteroids 0

ALL AGE

The Whites and Blues played out the final game of the year in a fun and entertaining fashion. The Whites were however stacked with young players and managed to get the win just in the end 7-3.

That wraps up another successful season of soccer and I would like to thank all the Committee members who have had a hand in making this season such a success.

Thanks to Lorraine and the girls Trish, Veronica, Belinda and others who have made the canteen such an organised success. I would also like to thank Anthony Stanley for another huge effort with setting up the fields each week and considering he is on his fifth season without any kids in the club that’s an awesome effort! Thanks to Andrew Stubbs for his energy and efficiency in running the BBQ each week and a massive thankyou to both Nick Fry and Anthony Stanley who have been refereeing all season. Without their efforts the season just wouldn’t happen!

I would also like to thank the small band of sponsors and supporters for their generous donations throughout the season: The Braidwood Lions Club, Braidwood Servicemen’s Club, Braidwood Mobil, Braidwood Foodworks, Bensley’s Buses and Braidwood Butchery.

Last but not least I would like to thank Alex Rea from the Braidwood Times who has made the Braidwood Junior Soccer Club visible within the region due to her great photos in the paper and is such a pleasure to work with!!

Lets hope the new season next year brings us a few more people who are keen to take this club forward and keep it alive for our kids in the future!
