CRICKET REPORT

14 Nov, 2007 03:00 AM
Braidwood cricket had a disappointing week with both the Central School team and the senior side suffering losses.

On Wednesday the Central School side played Balranald at Junee in perfect conditions. Braidwood won the toss and decided to bat but that was where the plans ended. In a dismal batting performance all of the batsmen dismissed bar one were bowled as the boys were routed for a meager 54 off just 17 overs. Only captain Aaron Van Essen provided any resistance to the steady Balranald attack. This was a great disappointment after such a sound batting performance in the earlier round that had provided the platform for a win.

With only 54 to defend Braidwood bowlers Van Essen, Pat Martin and Troy Harrison made Balranald fight hard to reach the total which they did in the 18th over for the loss of 3 wickets. In a sporting gesture Braidwood agreed to provide the opposition batting practice for their finals matches after they had past our score. This period suggested if Braidwood had been able to bat their over and add another 40 or 50 runs the match would have been very close indeed.

Although disappointed in this match the boys can be very proud of their performance on and off the field and now will learn from the experience as they prepare for next years competition.

Meantime the senior side is still without a win after losing by 6 wickets to Teachers in Saturday's game in Canberra. After finally winning a toss Braidwood had the chance to post score and defend it. However Braidwood were only able to last 38 overs before being dismissed for 115. Luke Staunton top scored with 26. Peter Hazell (15) and new boys Mick Barry (18), John Hinchera (14) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures in a disappointing batting performance.

Braidwood started much better in the field as Staunton and Troy Harrison ripped through the top order to have Teachers in trouble at 3 for 12. A fourth wicket to Daniel Wood at 50 gave the Braidwood side some hope but Teachers stuck to the task passing Braidwood's total in the 33rd over.

This weekend Braidwood will be at home to ANU and will be hoping to record their first win. Captain Peter Hazel is unavailable so the young Braidwood side will need as much support it can muster so come and help our lads to get on the board.
