Golf Matters

12 Aug, 2010 01:48 PM
There were some bemused, amused, relieved and disappointed golfers awaiting the results of last Saturday's monthly medal. The amused lot wondered why they had played better golf in the previous week's four club event than they did with their full set of clubs.

The amused lot included those who thought they had played pretty well until they discovered what Will Richards had managed. Those in the relieved and disappointed subsets included those who again had played below their potential.

One even ventured to mutter that he could not understand why he had bothered to play at all. Most of the remainder kept the game in perspective and accepted that sometimes logic and rationality apply as much to golf as other aspects of life. That is, not at all.

Steve Cansell won the Phil O'Toole four club event with an unlikely 38 points. He was brought back to earth last Saturday when he tried to replicate this effort with his full set. Donna Kuhn won the ladies event with Scotty and Penny Hardy the respective runners-up.

Gordon also picked up the NTP. The balls went to Geoff Hassall, Alec Henry and Will Richards. Will declared during the game that he needed to reduce his handicap from 20 to 15 so that he would be eligible for a junior competition in September.

His high hopes certainly received a boost last Saturday when he hit 77 off the stick for a net 57 and a win by seven from Pixie and eight from Michael Tillman-Ryan. Both Rob and Michael thought they were in with a good chance but 57 is one of the lowest net scores for years. Great game Will!

Ross Lawless and Geoff Hassall picked up the balls and Rod Coady was the NTP. The Jackpot was not won and is now $280. This Saturday it is back to more forgiving format with the Ross Lawless single stableford event.

Numbers have been a little low lately and the committee is hopeful that as the weather improves so will the numbers playing. The good thing about golf is that if you can get into the zone your day-to-day troubles and woes seem to fade away.
