Last Saturday week about 30 men and women teed off in the 2009 club championships. Expectations were high, but for many the first round ended any reasonable expectation that you would challenge the contenders. Nevertheless almost all completed the four rounds despite a good attempt by the storm on the final afternoon.
Mexican trickster, Lee Trevino has apparently been struck by lightening more than once while playing golf. Now he says, he always carries a one iron, because even God cannot hit a one iron.
Although four rounds can be a bit of a trial particularly when every stroke has to be played and counted, the efforts of the greenstaff are far more taxing. Les Munday and Luke Staunton did a great job and we thank them sincerely.
Patrick Martin is the 2009 Club Champion. His worse round was 82 and his best, 80 for a total of 325. He played the final round with 2007 champion, Rod Coady and this year's B grade winner, Brendon Heycox. Both Pat and Brendon shot 80 for the round while Rod's game faded with the disappearance of the fair weather.
Pat is the first junior for 18 years to win the championship. Although an individual achievement it is necessary to acknowledge the collective efforts of pat's family, particularly President Rob, Leigh Hunter and god father Donny. Behind every "junior" success, in anything, is a network of willing adults.
Bouncer Heycox went into the final round with a stranglehold on B grade and cruised to the win with a great final round. C grade was a lot more competitive!
Smiley Richards, Burglar Don and Massie Ferguson teed off in contention for the C grade win. Don and Keith's experience, with some help from thunderclap and lightening strike, put an end to Smiley's challenge.
Keith Ferguson and Don Burke settled down to an ebb and flow affair until Massie's clutch dropped out on the last hole. Don Burke's score of 373 was enough to win by one.
Keith left the club in disbelief at his attempt to play the final hole! Donny has many tips for the hopeful golfer. Always hope that today's game is better than yesterday's, but if it isn't, it doesn't matter. He also rarely mishits a ball, misses a fairway, three putts or lets his ego get in the way of sensible decision making.
Don Burke was also the 72 hole nett winner on a countback from Pat Martin. Eighteen hole winners on each day were Murray Smith, Brendon Heycox, Will Richards and Rob Dillon. Ball winners on the final day were Pixie, the Burglar, 24/7 and Smiley.
Plans are afoot to build a practice green. Anyone who thinks they can help with labour, money, materials or ideas please call Rob Martin. There is now a defacto driving range running down the fourth fairway. There are reasonably accurate distance markers from the sand bucket near the ladies tee.
Thank you to Scotty and Don and all those who helped with the bookwork. Next Saturday is the November medal and for those who are looking forward to a stableford game, the following week is the Medal of Medals round.
This year's presentation dinner is Saturday December 5 with the AGM the following Saturday.
