Punters swelter through race day heat wave

13 Feb, 2009 10:57 AM
The previous highest maximum on record was 37.5°C on 21st February 2004.

About a third to a half of the usual crowd turned up to support the race day which is known as one of the best in NSW Country Racing.

Jockey Club officials were monitoring the heat and the horses were being kept cool in the stalls, and hosed down as soon as they had returned to scale.

Despite the heat, the marquees were well attended as punters gathered round the iceboxes. There was also a large turn out of well dressed racegoers for the fashions on the field.

The main race of the day, the Country Energy Braidwood Cup over 1350m with prizemoney of $10,000 was won by Gelderbelle owned and trained by a very emotional Benny Wynen from the Saphire Coast with apprentice Kayla McEwen on board, Gangleri came in second place and Brenna 3rd.
