On a glorious Saturday afternoon at home the Braidwood Redbacks took on the second placed Narooma Whales.
With the boys as keen as mustard to finally play first half rugby, opposed to the other first half rugby where we just go out there and pretend to play football, the Redbacks showed that we were finally a team that others had to watch, with the first half showing all the talent and the hunger we possessed.
Our defence was once again outstanding, with Narooma having the advantage of some bigger players in the forward pack and backline, our boys played well above their weight by never letting Narooma over the advantage line.
Our attack was nothing to sneeze at either with Jacob Kain making one of his many line breaks to set up Braidwood's first try. Try scorer Maher though missed the kick and Braidwood went into half time 5-0 up.
At the break Braidwood were full of confidence and knew that if we kept going the way we were then the game was ours for the taking, not long in though Narooma's quick little five eight ran through our lines and kept running, running, running and running till he touch the ball down below the posts, converted kick, Narooma up 7-5.
This try had its advantages though, don't get me wrong I hate to see the other team score, but when a try is scored a kick off is then delivered and luckily it had just the right amount of height on it for Nick McGrath and Craig Coe to come through and send the unfortunate Narooma bloke that caught it flying as they collected him in a big hit. From then on the intensity was back.
Unlike the first half the ball wasn't being played most of the time in Narooma's territory and it was a real arm wrestle to see who would come out on top and after a lucky try to Narooma the score was 12-5 with about 20 minutes to go.
Braidwood then found another gear and charged back up the field and with the ball on their try line it was just a matter of finding a player in a gap to crash over the line. Blacky once again was commanding his troupes expertly and found Maher who was able to get over for another try, this time his boot was following his directions and he finally kicked a goal, making the score line 12-12 all with not long left on the clock.
To finish the game, Braidwood was doing most of the defending and showed true fighting spirit, never letting Narooma break through and win the match... Sadly the same went for us and we couldn't find those extra points to win a game that we surely deserved and the score finished 12-12.
A big congratulations to all the Redbacks, to come away with any points against a side like Narooma was great and to show the heart we did and play like we did will definitely spread like fire through the coastal teams of the competition, hopefully putting them on alert that the Redbacks are finally back.
Thanks to all who came down and supported us, and to all the sponsors: The Royal Mail Hotel, Braidwood Earthmoving and Damo.
Points this week went to the two Nick's who have easily been the most consistent for the Redbacks this year : 3 Nick McGrath, 2 Nick Black, 1 Joel Bradley.
Players Player this week went to Chris Pearson, who played half a game in the forwards and half a game in the backs, not once missing a tackle all day.
With a nice long weekend coming up there will be no game for the Redbacks, which is good for some due to a couple of injuries that the extra week will help with healing...
