Palerang athletes were among the 93 talented athletes to attend the South East Regional Academy of Sport (SERAS) annual Education Program for all scholarships holders in 2010 on the weekend of the 30th and 31st January at the University of Canberra.
The 'Learn Life - Live Sport' education program is designed to assist scholarship holders to develop their understanding of sport science and their responsibilities as potential elite athletes. In 2010 there are 103 scholarship holders across eight programs.
Lectures provided over the weekend included: An Introduction to Sport Psychology by SERAS executive director Garry Lane; Principles of Training by SERAS student intern David Halpin; Sports Nutrition by Vicki Deakin from the ACT Academy of Sport; and Injury Management and Prevention by Phil Newman from the University of Canberra. A number of workshops were also held during the program including: Media Skills with Cathy Reid; Public Speaking with Sue Willis; and Recovery from Exercise with David Halpin.
The SERAS Education Program is a major component of the athletes' scholarship. The academy will now focus on delivering its training camps over the coming months for Australian Rules, Basketball, Golf, Lawn Bowls, Netball and Snowsports.
