Soccer report Round 13

23 Aug, 2007 11:29 AM
A grey but mild morning greeted the round 13 action for the soccer season. Some teams were still plagued with kids out sick as the teams start to jostle for their finals positions. Plenty of goals were scored and some great games were played in each division as some nice passing football is starting to be played.

Thanks for the refereeing efforts of Nick Fry, Pat Martin, Nathan Oldfield and Zach Collins on the day and for the help of the Liversidge girls who helped set up the Junior fields.

SUB-JUNIORS

The subbies have been hit hard by the flu and virus that is raging through our community and the players who were well enough ended up playing in the Junior division! Hopefully we can get them back on the field for next week to give them a better run!

JUNIORS

Yugioh v Pokemon: The dominance of Yugioh was present from the outset as the hapless Pokemon struggled to control the rampaging Yugioh forwards. The Shoemark brothers, Harry and Will, were on fire in front of goal scoring 5 goals between them and Sam Daniher added another one to his tally for the season. Persistence is the key in this game and Pokemon were finally rewarded with a goal by Jarra Hilhorst and the roar of the crowd as they put the ball in the back of the net was massive and you could have been forgiven for thinking that they had just won the Grandfinal! Fantastic stuff! Best for Yugioh were Harry Shoemark, Will Shoemark and Ryan Castle and best for Pokemon were Kassie Liversidge, Jarra Hilhorst and Shannon Castle. Final score Yugioh 6 Pokemon 1

Digemon v Dragonball Z: Dragonball Z have been the team to beat for most of the season but they have been hit hard with the flu and have been vulnerable in defence. Digemon were struggling has well but recruited well and managed to be dominant for the majority of the game. Mitchell scored 5 goals and Charlotte 1 as Digemon took control of the game. However Dragonball Z were always creating chances and managed to score twice with Harry Evans and Lochie Ramm slotting the ball passed the Digemon keeper. Best for Digemon were Zali Liversidge, Adrian Holcman and Dylan Drury and best for Dragonball Z were Jeremy Ramm, Andrew Barr and Mikaela Clarke. Final score Digemon 6 Dragonball Z 2

INTERMEDIATES

Piranhas v Marlins: This was a very close game and but for the great defence from both teams the score could have been anything as plenty of chances were created. The Piranhas were a little tidier with their field play with some nice passing but the unorthodox defence of the Marlins starved the Piranhas of quality scoring chances. The Piranhas Patrick Willding scored twice to give them the upper hand in a close battle but the Marlins had the better of the final 10 minutes of the game and were unlucky not to score. The Marlins were finally rewarded in the last minute of the game as the Piranhas gave away a penalty and was neatly scored by Will Atkinson. Best for the Piranhas were Brent Laney, Isaac Jullienne and Forbes Corby and best for the Marlins were Kristina Holcman, Pat O'Connell and Adam Craig. Final score Piranhas 2 Marlins 1

Sharks v Barracudas: The Barracudas were down on numbers due to illness and played an awesome first half to keep the ladder leaders to nil all in an end to end display of attacking football. It wasn't until later in the game until the Sharks took control and managed to score 3 late goals to Justin Stubbs and Will Northcott which blew the score out disappointingly for the Barracudas who deserved something for their efforts. Best for the sharks were Justin Stubbs, Angus Bunn and Noah Verdon and best for the Barracudas were Tim Corcoran, Melissa Mundy and Rowan Brown. Final score Sharks 3 Barracudas 0

Stingrays v Eels

The Stingrays were down a few players and were able to put up a good fight for the majority of the game but the class of the Eels made it difficult for the Stingrays to penetrate their defence. The Eels were good on the break and scored 3 goals to give them the ascendancy but the Stingrays scored once to keep the Eels defence fighting hard to give them the win. Best for the Eels were Matthew Royds, Cameron Pont and Scott Birkett and best for the Stingrays were Tom Daniher, John Sharp and Harry Shoemark. Final score Eels 3 Stingrays 1

SENIORS

Fireballs V Comets

This was an interesting game that would see the loser head to the bottom of the table. The Comets were in control from the start though and within the first minute were rewarded a penalty and was capably put away by Harley Williams. The Fireballs gradually started to take control of the game and were unlucky not to score before halftime. The second half was a dominate performance from the Fireballs and were finally rewarded with a scrappy goal to Alex Royds from his brothers mistake in goal for the Comets. Best for the Fireballs were Chris Corcoran Alex Royds and Brianna Pont and best for the Comets were Claydon Williams, Allison Brown and Thomas (Baby Face) Royds. Final score Fireballs 1 Comets 1

Asteroids v Meteors

The Meteors were hit hard by illness and found themselves down 1 nil within the first minute of the game. The Asteroids were playing well as a team and created plenty of chances and were soon 2 nil up. The Meteors made some changes and were a lot tighter in defence which frustrated the Asteroids and though they had control of the game they couldn't penetrate the Meteors defence. The second half saw the Meteors create some good opportunities to score but some scrambling defence of the Asteroids kept the Meteors out. An outstanding goalkeeping effort from Sam McGlone kept the final score respectable for the Meteors. Best for the Asteroids were Jason Nucifora, Josh Stubbs and Cameron Bradley and best for the Meteors were Sam McGlone, Tashi Wood-Ward and Jess Willding. Final score Asteroids 4 Meteors 0

ALL AGE

The Whites took on the Blues and the Blues took an early lead with a nice goal as they dominated possession. The Whites were struggling to get any control as the Blues were more determined to get to the ball first. The Second half was a different story as a few changes were made and the defence of the Whites was stiffened by the entry of Rachel Laney into the game. Three goals later and the Whites were in control as the Blues were searching for answers. A late goal for the Blues made the final 5 minutes interesting but the Whites hung on to win a tight game 3-1.
