Rod Coady and Warren West won the foursomes championship in, what an observer described, as "horriffic conditions." This is clearly an exaggeration as those fighting the bushfires during last Sunday's weather event would appreciate.
Last Saturday was a sensational day and three competitions were held. Sister Barb and Inspector Vlad displayed ominous form as a lead up to next week's mixed knockout final by winning their respective competitions. Vera Bachinger was runner up and NTP. Lancer will be teaming with husband Eric in the final against Vlad and Barb. Good luck to all.
Donny Burke was runner up to Vlad who was also the NTP. Alec Henry and Barry Toombs won a ball. Also on Saturday five pairs played the first 27 holes of this year's Foursome Championships. The event had been postponed because of "insufficient staters." This is an event in which each player hits alternatively. A game of "sorry mate" as a perfect tee shot is hit out of bounds... A game in which consistency within the pair, is the key.
Friday and Saturday's stiff breeze became a gale laced with occasional rain by Sunday. Tricky conditions no doubt, but not unusual on a highland course during the equinox, a lunar eclipse and a winshift. Congratulations to Rod and Warren who had also shown good form as runners up in the Canadian Foursomes the previous week.
Canadian Foursomes begins with each player teeing off, then selecting the better tee shot and playing alternatively. Smooth Eric and the Hyphenated Burglar from Bungendore were up to their old tricks. It is a mystery to me that a fella with a handicap of 31 can have the better drive on 7 of the first 8 holes? As his slice takes over and the drives veer toward timber Eric's drives suddenly find the centre of the fairway!
Frank Kelly was the NTP with Terry Hughes and sparrow pipping Bill Heard and Frank Williams for third. Next week is a medley 2 ball and the final of the Mixed knockout. All the best to Vera, Eric, Barb and Vlad.
The Committee is working on next year's program and welcomes suggestions from players. Please contact Captain Rod. Coming up in October is the Ladies Open on the 15th and the Club Championships on the last two weekends.
