The inaugural August Monkittee rising star award was won by Rob "pixie" Dillon after his performances over the past two weeks. Rob won the hastily arranged Stableford event on 12 August and followed this up by winning the "Battle of the Sexes" last Saturday.
The men's foursome championships scheduled for the weekend of 12 and 13 August was postponed because of insufficient starters. Absentees offered various reasons for non-participation including medical imperatives, employment, family engagements and urgent travel. Rob won by one from Frank Williams with John Kelly the NTP and Brian Waddingham and Rod Coady the ball winners. Vera Bachinger won the ladies competition from Penny Hardy.
Last Saturday Rob won a clearcut victory from the travelling burglar with Smooth Eric the NTP. Judy Scott won the ladies competition and the balls went to R.M Williams, Scrabbler Toombs and Dapto. This Saturday the ladies have a 2BBB event while the men will be competing for one of the last Monthly Medals of the year.
Over the past years the platypus has had many conversations with the likes of Tom and Janet, Gordon Shorrock and Boomer about the benign weather cell that seems to always enable the Mulligans to play on Friday afternoons. Frequently it appears as though it is raining everywhere but the golf course so it was perhaps not surprising that five intrepid optimists teed off last Friday afternoon. Interestingly there were others playing.
A group of four allegedly hoped to play at Mollymook but could not do so because of a "corporate" booking so they headed for the Catalina Club. Unfortunately it was raining so they thought: "why not play at Braidwood!" This proves the old Scottish saying: " the weather is rarely too bleak for golf." The emphasis here is on "rarely" and for the first time in over a year the Mulligan's abandoned play after six holes. A friend of the matriarch who lives on the side of Jilly declared that the temperature did not rise above three degrees last Friday and that goes some way toward explaining the absence of argument when play was abandoned.
Fortunately the benign weather cell was evident on the Saturday when a fine day greeted those participating in the Battle of the Sexes. Congratulatiuons to Rob Dillon for his play over the past fortnight.
