The Bushrangers ran up a 50 point victory in the first round and with the Bears still not recovering from a massive injury toll to date the Bears looked in for a long afternoon but to their credit they dug deep and led 8-6 at halftime. Halfway through the second half Tuggeranong held on to a 16-14 lead then the Bears were denied two tries which were ruled to have come off forward passes much to the local supporters dismay. The Bushrangers ran in two late tries, the last one right on fulltime to give them a scoreline that was no indication of the closeness of the game.
The match itself was a cracker, nine tries, a bit of biffo, huge hits in defence and the underdog nearly causing the upset in front of an appreciative home crowd. Steve Clarke, Phil Jonas, Dan White, and Mark Piper carted the ball up all day and gave an extra effort in defence. Clarkies' troublesome arm caused him to retire early in the second half but hopefully it will be right for next Sunday. Big Ty Noble and Pete McMaster proved a handful every time they ran the ball and both brought off some punishing hits in defence. Pete showed his Aussie rules skills when he outjumped everyone to score the first try of the game off a pinpoint Jimmy Evan`s bomb. Wayne Crisp found plenty of room to move at five-eight and made heaps of metres when he took the line on and defended relentlessly and picked the Coaches Award. Outside backs Jason Kolber, Joe McGowan, Alex Hudson and Biggsey all had big games against their more fancied opposition. Biggsie made a welcome return from injury. Daniel Backhouse had a busy afternoon at fullback. He got plenty of work with kick returns and made good yardage and guided the Bears defence well.
Game Day Sponsor the Braidwood Mobil Servo `s Players Player Award went to Acting Captain Cameron Guihot who had a top game at hooker, he constantly made good yards out of dummy-half and gave great service from the ruck. Jimmy Evans picked up 2nd place with his tradesmen like display at half back. Jimmy was never far from the action all game . Thanks to Henry and Lauren for their generous support.
Next Sunday the Bears take on the Gordon Highlanders at North Park, Goulburn at 2pm and the Bears will be strengthened with the return of Captain Marty Edwards, Adam Hacker, Gordon Pender Seymour, Rob Gara and Joel Tuma. Everyone at the Bears wishes Marty`s Dad Tom a speedy recovery from his recent surgery.
