The Braidwood Servicemen’s Club Bears trialled against Group 8 side the Yass Magpies on Saturday and went down 36-4.
With Paul Stuart, Ty Noble, Brett Backhouse, Francis Kelly , Craig Glover and the Turnbull Brothers unavailable with niggling injuries it gave Coach Newsome and Manager Fats Moran an opportunity to have a good look at the rest of the Bears squad against a quality opposition.
The effort put in by new Bears Mitch Gainey, Josh Stubbs, Jason Enslow, Pete Ellis, Josh Nicholls, Grant Guihot and James Thomas was outstanding. Buzz McGlone, Josh Augustin, Danny Martynow, Hamish Wheeler and Pete Kelly all had solid first up games. Pig Guihot, Jason Kolber, Daniel Walker, Dave Cook, Duck Webster and Rowdy Augustin followed up their good Binalong 9’s form from the previous weekend.
Adam Hacker and Scotty Bakos sustained niggling injuries early in the match much to their disappointment. Yass opened the scoring 2 minutes in and the Bears quickly replied with a try to new signing Mitch Gainey. Yass ran in another 8 tries by fulltime.
The Magpies first grade experience shone through when they spread the ball wide and capitalised to score most of their tries whereas the Bears defence in tight was awesome for most of the game. The Bears now have next weekend off before they take on the Australian Defence Force Academy at A.D.F.A. on Saturday week in the first comp game.
