Congratulations to the 'Braidwood Times' for its front-page article and picture (Braidwood Times, Wednesday November 4, 2009). This is not the first time that residents' concern has been expressed about possible interference with the 'The Rocks' at the bottom end of Wallace Street.
Ever since I can remember, funeral corteges from our three churches has passed through 'The Rocks' on the way from the church to the cemetery. I am a superstitious animal, and I believe that when my time comes I shall want to do the same. It is part of the 'Rite of Passage' for the district, and if those rocks are not there some element of security of passage will have been removed. Last week's protestors may not have realised it, but they were representing something very deep in our collective civic consciousness. I point this out to visitors I take on Town Tours.
Now I am well aware that it is pretty useless taking to people like Town Planners and the RTA about such things. Nor am I expecting much sympathy from some of our Councilors. Nevertheless I would like to suggest two points for discussion:
1 'The Rocks' must stay, unaltered.
2 The looming traffic problem in the extension of Wallace Street can be solved by a one-way system. There are already two road entrances to the new 116 Lot Subdivision south of Cowper Street. There are a number of possible permutations of this idea, which could be implemented in a way, which would dilute traffic flow and ensure the safety of 'The Rocks'.
A Shepherd,
Braidwood.
