A man has died after being hit by a car travelling in a bus lane while crossing a six-lane road during peak hour in Sydney's northern beaches, police say.

The man, 31, was crossing from east to west on Pittwater Road, about 15 metres from the Ramsay Street intersection in Collaroy, when he was hit by a car travelling north in the bus lane about 5.30pm on Tuesday, Inspector Nigel Taylor of Northern Beaches Local Area Command said.
Several people, including the car driver, gave the Collaroy man first aid and paramedics tried to resuscitate him, police said. The man was taken to Mona Vale Hospital but could not be revived, police added.
The car was being forensically examined by police and the driver underwent mandatory testing at Manly Hospital. The test results were expected to be released in a few weeks' time, Inspector Taylor said.
There are no traffic lights near the intersection. The nearest traffic crossings are at Mactier Street to the north and Collaroy Street to the south.
"The only thing we can advise [pedestrians] should be using the provided crossings at the traffic control lights," Inspector Taylor said.
Inspector Taylor said investigators were still searching for witnesses to the accident and appealed for anyone with information to phone Northern Beaches Local Area Command via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
"Pittwater Road is the main arterial road north/south on the peninsula, so there would have been a high volume of traffic in both directions," he said.
