Last Tuesday evening saw the final of Braidwood Tennis Club’s Spring competition. Speculation was rife prior to the night as to whether the minor premiers team 2 (led by Brian Oxley) would suffer a loss of momentum after their well-earned week off. This feeling increased when one of their key players, James “Gundo” Gunderson, limped into view with a painful hamstring injury suffered whilst sailing on Sydney Harbour during “work”.

Team 3 (led by Mick Toirkens- the outstanding player on the night) made the most of the humid conditions and raced to an early lead. Rodney Royds’ replacement Jenny Daniher quickly developed a formidable combination with Col Temple to win their first set from Oxley and the clearly-struggling Gunderson . However, it was the excellent form of Ben and Corinne Howard, Jess Lewis and John Jones which soon turned the tide in favour of team 2. In the end team 2 ran out comfortable winners, accepting their much-coveted wine glass trophies from President Nick Fry at the end of the night.
Many thanks go to Nick Fry, Jenny Daniher and all who helped to stage the competition this spring. Please be aware that there will be a new night-time competition starting up in early February- anyone wishing to have a hit and a laugh is more than welcome to come along.
