Mogg's contract runs out at the end of the season but he signalled his intention to remain in Canberra beyond that.

It is a show of faith in the club that gave him a chance after he had been overlooked by his home state Queensland and moved to the nation's capital for one last crack.

The 24-year-old made his Wallabies debut last year and has one of the most damaging boots in the game. He has emerged from John  I Dent Cup obscurity to be an important cog in the Brumbies side.

Salary cap pressure is starting to become a factor for last year's Super Rugby grand finalists with star playmakers Matt Toomua and Christian Lealiifano also off contract at the end of the year.

Toomua has been linked with a return to his home town of Melbourne and it is believed Lealiifano was also weighing up offers from the Rebels and overseas.

Scrum-half Nic White and versatile forward Scott Fardy  will also be on the long off-contract list at the end of the season, along with Scott Sio, Fotu Auelua, Clyde Rathbone, Henry Speight and Joe Tomane.

Mogg was hopeful they would also want to remain part of a team emerging as a serious title contender.

"Obviously my preference would be to stay," Mogg said on Monday. "I think we've built a a really good, strong culture at the club and we've got a strong group.

"I think everyone's preference would be to stay, but that's not up to us as players, that's up to the coaching staff and the office side of the Brumbies.

"I'm concentrating on the footy at the moment and we'll go from there. I think everybody would love to stay, but at the end of the day that's football, and it doesn't always work out.

"You can't really control what everyone else does, but if you're playing well and you're offering things to the side they'll want to keep you."

Mogg said the Chiefs game was the start of a stretch of games that would define the Brumbies' season and he emphasised the importance of a good start against the reigning champions.

After the Chiefs they travel to Christchurch to play the Canterbury Crusaders, before hosting the Durban Sharks and then touring South Africa.

He said the loss of Chiefs playmaker Aaron Cruden was massive and he was their X-factor.

But several key outs and a relatively poor month from the Chiefs had him even more wary of coming up against the champions on Anzac Day.

"They've had a couple of disappointing results over the last month in terms of how they want to play," Mogg said.

"For us we're coming off the bye and a strong performance against the [Queensland] Reds defensively and we haven't beaten the Chiefs as a group over the last two years.

"We lost in the final last year so for us it's obviously a big game to kick off the second half of the season well against a quality team in the Chiefs."

Brumbies lock Sam Carter (knee) will be available if he can get through training this week.
