Supermarket proprietor Jeremy Campbell-Davys says the proposal would cause the loss of around 14 car spaces close to his business.
Mr Campbell-Davys says “The majority of my customers are elderly and the loss of these will cause problems beside the obvious one of convenience. The remainder of Lascelles Street west of the supermarket has an unmade and rough dirt footpath which could be hazardous for the elderly and difficult for shopping trolley movement.”
Besides the issue for the supermarket, the ‘cut and paste’ nature of the design (See Letters page 2) shows little consideration for the heritage values of the site, or the movement of large transport vehicles through the intersection.
One local said “there would be little opportunity to turn left into Wallace from the supermarket during heavy traffic, such as Sunday afternoon” as the Canberra bound traffic would have all the right of way.”
Most comments about the proposal include a preference for a simple low-rise roundabout that would have less visual and vehicular impact, combined with better signage.
The drop in session held by Council at the Old Library last week was only attended by a handful of people.
