This style of leadership sees the church move decidedly away from the traditional model of a single priest in charge of the Parish to a “ministry of all believers” as referred to within the bible.
While Arch Deacon John Barnes will have overall authority as the Bishop’s representative, the work of the Parish will be shared according to the gifts of the team members and the broader congregation.
In particular, Arch Deacon Des McGuire, Rev Peter Malone and lay minister Brad Moore will be handling the day-to-day ministry. Bishop Stuart stated in his homily on the night, that the greatest asset the Diocese has, is each member of the churches within it.
This point was also highlighted in the reading from Apostle Paul’s first letter to the people of Corinth, where he described in great detail the role of Christians as members of the body of Christ.
The evening finished with the Bishop dedicating the Parish Centre (formerly the Rectory) to its new use as offices and meeting rooms. There was also a great time of fellowship over supper, where in conversation it was clear that the team was looking forward to continuing to serve this wonderful community to the best of their abilities.
