Let’s put on a show! It’s one of the oldest plot triggers in the feel-good movie manual, but Swedish director Lukas Moodysson (Together, Lilya 4 Ever) has an entirely different take on it, drawn largely from a semi-autobiographical graphic novel written by his wife Coco that recalls her own rebellious youth. The year is 1982. Klara and Bobo (Mira Grosin and Mira Barkhammar, both wonderful) are middle-school oddballs who refuse to accept that they have missed out on the fleeting triumph of home-made punk; in a spirit of defiance, they decide to form a band. Neither of them can play anything, however, so they recruit Hedvig (Liv  Lemoyne), an awkwardly tall girl from a strict Christian home who, thanks perhaps to her happy-clappy church, has learned guitar. For the rest of the film the girls try to play music, fight with their respective parents, diss the metalheads who practise at the same youth centre, and experiment with hair gel. There is no sense that any of this is a rite of passage; life is random and so is the film, which – in its sharp observations, lively rage and gleeful resistance to anything like a plot – is much like the punk music the three girls revere. Anyone who has ever wanted to be in a band, even for a second, will find it irresistible.
