UPDATE: POLICE have confirmed that two men are currently at Port Macquarie Police Station assisting detectives with enquiries into the stabbing death of a man in the CBD on Sunday morning.
Police media said the two men had not been charged.
Earlier on Sunday, police appealed to the public for information from the public as they investigated the stabbing death of a man.
A 25-year-old Port Macquarie man died after an altercation in Horton Street about 1.40am on Sunday.
Bystanders started resuscitation, and paramedics treated the man and took him to Port Macquarie Base Hospital in a critical condition.
The 25-year-old died two hours later.
Police confirmed the man's injuries were consistent with a stabbing.
A number of witnesses have come forward with varying reports of the incident in the CBD.
Acting Inspector Kerrie Brill said the police were seeking information from the public, including any footage they might have.
"At this stage, we believe a number of people may have witnessed the incident," she said.
Acting Inspector Brill said information from the public would be crucial.
"There would be a lot of people out there at that time of night, some may be intoxicated, some may not," she said.
Police believe people home for the weekend, given it is the holidays, may have witnessed the stabbing.
All security footage avenues are being explored.
Police are attempting to locate two young males who they believe can assist with inquiries.
They were casually dressed and not further described at this stage.
Acting Inspector Brill said the incident had shaken up the community and impacted on everyone, not just the police involved and other emergency services, but security and other witnesses.
Police had no information on Sunday to suggest it was not a random attack.
Anyone with information should contact their local police station or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
Police have established Strike Force Semple to investigate the stabbing.
