Forget the Melbourne Cup, the Bledisloe Cup or even the FA Cup, last Sunday the 2nd of November, the Braidwood Tennis Club hosted Bungendore Tennis Club at the Braidwood Tennis Complex, the winner to hold aloft the Palerang Cup for the next 12 months. Braidwood, the current holders of the cup, after an emphatic 11 sets to 1 victory in 2013, were confident of another victory. President Mick Toirkens said “we knew it would be a tough day, but were quietly confident of a victory”.

The team of 12 Bungendore players arrived 1 hour early for a warm up session, they looked fit, energetic and ready to go. The Braidwood team consisted of a wide range of ages, from Sam who is 12, a couple of teenagers to our great war horse, Col Temple from Nerriga, who turned 80 last year. It is truly a great effort for Col to remain fit and active, playing competitive tennis at his age.
Weather conditions were perfect, the crowd was building, the Palerang Cup was glistening in the sunshine and after formalities were exchanged, play commenced. Scores seesawed throughout the day, however, Bungendore came up with winners on the day 10 sets to 5.
It was a terrific day for both teams, Mick Toirkens said in his after game speech “the tennis was of a high standard but more importantly it was played in the true spirit of the game”. These sentiments were mirrored by the Bungendore team. Bungendore will now be the home of the Palerang Cup for the next 12 months, to be shown off in various businesses within Bungendore. Next year’s event will take place in Bungendore.
The weekend for the Braidwood Tennis Club also included a street stall on the Saturday. A laundry basket chocked full of goodies was the raffle prize along with a huge array of cakes, slices and biscuits.
The winner of the raffle was Judy Nielsen, with over $800 raised on the day. These funds will be used towards new flooring in the tennis club house. Many thanks to the businesses and club members that contributed to the day, including Landmark Daniel Walker and Braidwood Rural and to everyone that purchased goods and raffle tickets to support the Braidwood Tennis Club.
