Last Friday Braidwood Central’s senior Year 7/8 debating team – Ruby Gurling, Jessie Kay, Haddie Davies and Darcy Gordon – travelled to Bomaderry to take part in the Regional Final of the Premiers Debating Challenge, competing against Smiths Hill Selective High School.

Smiths Hill often wins the Regional Final in both this age group and Year 9/10. In fact, earlier this year the BCS 9/10 team also won through to this stage but lost to Smiths Hill. This time the 7/8 team reversed the result, winning a close debate on the scrapping of single sex schools.
Of the 387 teams that entered the competition, Braidwood is now one of only ten remaining in contention.
In two weeks’ time, the BCS team and the other nine regional winners will travel to The State Championships at The Women’s College of Sydney University where they will stay for three days, interacting with each other, taking meals and relaxing together in the gaps in an intense schedule of debates. This will be an adventure for our four enthusiastic young people, and a chance to mix closely with their peer group from around the state.
When the team arrives at Sydney University, a schoolmate will already be there. Jay Davies is part of our region’s combined schools team competing in the Year 9/10 Championships over the preceding three days. Both age groups will watch the 9/10 Final before the older students leave and the younger ones take their place.
