The Braidwood Greens opposed the development of the Dargues Reef mine at Majors Creek, and continue to oppose both its operation and expansion to include ore processing.

The operator’s environmental record speaks for itself, and does not inspire confidence, with several breaches before the mine is even operating.
The operator’s record of community engagement is not much better. In February 2013 they repeatedly assured the community there would be “no cyanide” so as “not to replicate some of the issues that are seen at Captains Flat”. It seems that commitment has fallen by the wayside. They have yet to pay their contribution to Palerang Council for the upgrade of the Braidwood Recreation Ground, leaving Council’s plans for that facility in some disarray.
While it has paid for upgrades to the road, that has a direct benefit to the company itself and should not be interpreted as good corporate citizenship.
Writing from the post-apocalyptic landscape of Captains Flat, I fear for the future of Majors Creek should the NSW Government approve Unity Mining’s application. The history of the Molonglo River should also serve as a stark warning about processing ore at a river’s headwaters.
