The British "pitchsider" who has been ejected from three Big Bash League games in Sydney this summer has been banned from all matches governed by Cricket Australia. The ban includes Tests, one-day internationals, the BBL, Sheffield Shield and Matador Cup but not the World Cup, which is run by the International Cricket Council.

NSW Police confirmed that the man had been charged over alleged trespass offences after being found to have re-entered ANZ Stadium, a venue from which he had six days earlier been banned, during the Sydney derby on Saturday night.

The man, 30-year-old British national Rajiv Mulchandani, was also evicted from the Sixers' opening-game win over Melbourne Renegades at the SCG on December 19 and from two BBL games last season – at the SCG and Melbourne's Etihad Stadium – when spotted stationed with a laptop computer in the crowd. He had been issued a ban notice from the Sydney Olympic Park precinct when removed from Sydney Thunder's match against Brisbane Heat last Sunday. He was suspected by police and cricket anti-corruption officials at the grounds of engaging in "pitchsiding", an activity where a spectator uses the slight time difference in international television broadcasts to place in-play bets on the match they are watching live.

The advantages gained by betting from the venue through overseas gambling organisations like Betfair in the UK can be extremely lucrative. The practice is not a criminal offence, but is increasingly being heavily frowned upon by the ICC and Cricket Australia, who are attempting to stamp it out at their grounds and are lobbying to have governments introduce legislation to ban it in Australia. Their only tool against it as it stands is ejecting spectators from venues for breaches of conditions of the terms of entry. That has been the explanation for Mulchandani being tossed out of BBL games five times in the past year now. He was granted conditional bail and will appear at Burwood Local Court on January 20.

A star of the rise?

Memo to talent scouts: it might be worth keeping tabs on James Sutherland's daughter, Annabel. The 13-year-old recently claimed a hat-trick with her medium-pacers while representing Victoria's under-15s team during the national championships in Sydney. She claimed the amazing figures of 5-2. It could have been better. "Her 10-year-old brother, Tom, chirped up with it would have been 6-1 if that girl had taken that catch," Sutherland recalled at the Women in Cricket Breakfast on the weekend. The Cricket Australia chief was there to watch his daughter but unfortunately missed the hat-trick as he was on the phone. Sutherland, however, had a pretty decent excuse. He was urgently reorganising the summer's Test schedule.

No west fish

James Sutherland was, of course, a handy player before he became the boss of Australian cricket. He played four first-class games for Victoria from 1990-93 and claimed nine wickets with his seamers, one of which was a young Ricky Ponting. Sutherland could also throw with both arms, which prompted Merv Hughes to describe him as being "amphibious".

Revved up

Also present at the Women in Cricket Breakfast was Ravi Shastri, the former India opener and current team director. He had the room in howls of laughter with the story of the victory lap he made around the MCG in 1985 behind the wheel of the Audi 100 he had won for being player of the series. The entire Indian team was also on board, Shastri said, so it's just as well he did not have a prang. "I can tell you now, I didn't have a licence," Shastri said.

Simon Keen was just a face in the crowd last month but he is not far off an appearance in the Big Bash League. The Blacktown first-grade batsman was pulled out of the crowd during a Twenty20 international at ANZ Stadium last month to take part in a catching competition. He sat on the Sixers bench on Saturday night during the Sydney derby.
