Bilal Taha, also known as Bill, was shot multiple times in broad daylight in front of a home on Fifth Avenue, Condell Park, shortly after 6pm.

The 34-year-old was treated by paramedics at the scene but later died in hospital.

Police were told a car drove from the scene shortly after the shooting.

Police say the killing was the latest retaliation in a feud between two local families that has escalated over the past two months.

It was the third time the families had shot at each other.

"The families involved in this conflict must take ownership of what is occurring," Detective Superintendent Dave Eardley said. "There must be an end to this violence now."

The families were known to police and were "well-entrenched in criminal enterprise".

Friends and family have posted photos and messages to Facebook in memory of Mr Taha.

One wrote on Monday morning: "I carry your heart with me, I carry it in my heart...... RIP Bill... xoxo".

Later that night she posted: "The heartache...."

Another wrote: "My brother I love you. You will always have a special place in our hearts. As the saying goes the good die young. Life will never be the same without you. Till we meet again bro".
