As if that title wasn't enough.

Now Prince Philip, the Queen's husband who already boasts a mouthful of honorifics, can add another gong to his name after Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced that he would become a Knight of the Order of Australia.

The 93-year-old gaffe-prone prince, who once told a boy who dreamed of becoming an astronaut that he "could do with losing a little bit of weight", is no stranger to the odd post-nominal letter.

His full title, according to the official website of the British Monarchy, is HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, KG (Knight of the Garter), KT (Knight of the Thistle), OM (Order of Merit), GBE (Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire), AC (Companion of the Order of Australia), QSO (Companion of The Queen's Service Order), PC (Privy Counsellor).

Prince Philip was born a Prince of Greece and Denmark in Corfu in 1921, but renounced that royal title when he became a naturalised British subject in 1947, when he married into the British royal family.

Then there are the scores of titles, decorations, and honorary appointments given to him by various countries.

You'd be forgiven if you hadn't heard of some of them.

Among the more elaborate sounding decorations he has received are the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Condor of the Andes, from Bolivia; the Member of the Most Distinguished Order of Izzuddin, from the Maldives; the Knight of the Order of the Elephant, from Denmark; and from Ethiopia, the Knight Grand Cross with Chain of the Order of the Queen of Sheba.

He has also been awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of Leopold by Belgium; and the Grand Cordon of the National Order of the Leopard by Zaire, which is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Those last two titles got him into a spot of bother when he confused them at a funeral,  The Independent newspaper in Britain reported.

"At the funeral of King Baudouin of Belgium in 1993, the prince wore a smart sash of green with red and gold stripes. It was not the Belgian Order of Leopold but the Zaireian Order of the Leopard," the newspaper reported.

While his latest honour is being questioned in some circles in Australia, residents of a remote village on the tiny south Pacific island of Tanna, in the Vanuatu group, are sure be rejoicing. There, villagers worship Prince Philip as a god.

They believe Prince Philip, who visited Vanuatu in 1974, is descended from their spirit ancestors, and hold a feast every year to celebrate his birthday, while children are reportedly taught about a god who lives in England who will one day return.
