So declared Queensland Labor leader Annastacia Palaszczuk in her triumphant election night speech.

If ever there was a statement to send a chill down the spine of a NSW Premier preparing to stake the re-election of his government on an asset privatisation strategy in a few weeks, this would be it.

The Queensland election result has demonstrated the willingness of voters to throw out a first term government with a viciousness that overcomes even an historically enormous parliamentary majority - precisely the situation that exists in NSW.

If the expected uniform swing to Labor of 13.5 per cent was replicated in the NSW election, Labor would rocket to about 45 seats, bringing it achingly close to taking power in a 93-seat parliament.

 

But the government will also be taking comfort in the knowledge there are a lot of differences between what happened to their Queensland colleagues on Saturday night and the battle they are preparing to fight on March 28.

Most significantly, the Queensland result confirms electricity privatisation is far and away the most important policy issue in the NSW campaign.

Labor will continue to hammer its opposition to the government's plan to lease 49 per cent of the poles and wires businesses to the private sector for 99 years.

It will hope the Queensland result will set the minds of NSW voters turning over with thoughts along the lines of : "If Queenslanders are convinced it's such a terrible idea, then perhaps it really is".

Labor will also be paying close attention the apparent failure of Queensland Premier Campbell Newman's strategy of tying asset sales to the riches it will bring.

He was talking up what could be done with the $37 billion proceeds from leasing electricity and port assets, including billions for new infrastructure and paying down government debt.

This, of course, is precisely Mike Baird's pitch to NSW voters: he wants them to focus on the $20 billion in road, rail and other infrastructure that he says will flow from his plan.

From a Coalition perspective, however, it's not quite time to start panicking. Primarily, their strategists will be taking comfort in the stark differences between Newman and Baird.

Newman, with his crash through attitude, had become intensely unpopular with voters; Baird is immensely popular and is likely to remain so during the campaign barring unforeseen circumstances.

They will also realise that there was something of a "perfect storm" that hit the Queensland LNP in the last week of the campaign, thanks to the furore around Tony Abbott's decision to knight Prince Philip and then to announce a review of penalty rates and the minimum wage.

The Queensland election result will no doubt have the Baird government spooked, but it will feel it's far from dead yet.
