Local author Rebecca Soames was at Miss Ruby’s bookstore on Sunday, 1st March, for the launch of her first book “1911 Imogene’s Story”. Cr Paul Cockram was on hand to address the gathering and launch this powerful first offering. Not only is Rebecca a passionate writer, she is also a mother of seven children ranging from 10 months to 17 years old.

The opening sentence could strike a chord with some folks: “We all have our secrets; events that we have endured in our pasts; which have contributed to the who it is we are today.” This is a part fiction story about Imogene, in her eightieth year, approaching the end of her life and wondering how different her life would have been if events had not occurred in the way that they did.
The character Imogene was inspired by Rebecca’s Grandmother, who spent her final years in a nursing home before passing away recently. This is not her story. However, Rebecca uses the final reflective years after a long life to recall and portray a life set in 1911. With the one hundred year anniversary of Anzac this year, we can cast our minds back on this journey to explore some of the hardships experienced in the early part of the last century. Paul Cockram also expressed some of the underlying issues explored in this book that exist in our community like domestic violence and suicide that are not generally acknowledged.
