Cheika will also delay naming his Wallabies captain until the end of the Super Rugby season, with Brumbies skipper Stephen Moore and incumbent Test leader Michael Hooper looming as the top two candidates.

Pocock is pushing for a return to the ACT Brumbies starting side this weekend in a bid to get his Super Rugby season back on track after it was derailed by injury in round one.

Pocock has played just seven games since the start of the 2013 season and in that time NSW Waratahs star Hooper has emerged as Australia's premier openside flanker.

Cheika believes the pair can work in tandem to boost the Wallabies' hopes of winning the World Cup, but conceded there would likely be room for only one in Australia's starting XV.

"I need a little bit more time to see him, but in saying that I was in Canberra for [the Brumbies'] round-one game and he played very, very well and was man of the match," Cheika said.

"He's only had 20 minutes since then ... but once he gets a run of games, he's a world-class performer and I'm sure he will deliver, there's no issue there."

The Brumbies will resume normal training on Wednesday when their full squad returns to the capital after a four-day Wallabies camp with Cheika.

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham, Pocock and 11 other players took a break from Super Rugby duties to start implementing Cheika's vision for World Cup success.

It was the first time Cheika had worked with Pocock and is the start of the 26-year-old's journey back to the international stage after two knee reconstructions in the past two years.

There was speculation last week that Pocock's decision to speak up about homophobic slurs in a heated Brumbies-Waratahs match would affect his Test future.

But Cheika, who is also the Waratahs' coach, said the issue which led to Jacques Potgieter being fined $20,000 was dead and had not been mentioned in camp.

"I don't see any signs in [Pocock] lacking in belief, he knows what he needs to do and he's a smart guy," Cheika said.

"He knows how to get himself there, which is a real trick. I haven't had a chance to ever coach [Pocock], but he's got a really good mature mentality which is good for other players as well."

Pocock is one of five players with Wallabies captaincy experience in the initial 51-man World Cup squad.

Hooper took the reins last year when Moore tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a Test against France while James Horwill and Will Genia have both led the team.

"[Moore] is obviously a powerful leader in the team and what he says is important, he's great experience across two World Cups and we want to tap into that," Cheika said.

"We've got a lot of leadership experience and at a young age as well, we've got to take advantage of that. But I'll wait until the end of the Super Rugby season [to decide on a captain]."

Larkham's role as the Wallabies' attack coach has forced the Brumbies to readjust their training week in preparation to play the Free State Cheetahs at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night.

But Larkham pulled Brumbies players aside at the Wallabies information camp to put them through extra sessions to ensure the team's preparation for the Cheetahs doesn't suffer.

Pocock could return to the No. 7 jersey to play the Cheetahs after a 20 minute cameo against the Waratahs in his return from an ankle injury.

Larkham is also trying to find a replacement for outside centre Tevita Kuridrani, who is out of action for the next seven weeks with a shoulder problem.

James Dargaville looms as the most likely man to fill the No. 13 jersey while Nigel Ah Wong and Henry Speight are also options.
