Temperatures fell to just 9.7 degrees overnight as a cold front passed through metropolitan Melbourne, just a few days after the city was basking in 28 degrees and sunshine.

The cold front brought with it heavy rain and cold winds.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Michael Halfpenny said the cold front was more typical of a winter's day than mid-April.

"The rain was quite widespread, but we had substantial falls over the eastern suburbs," he said.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Burwood East, which was drenched in 30mm of rain, while the western suburbs received up to 8mm of rain.

Much of Melbourne saw rain and hail continue throughout the day, with Doncaster and Mernda receiving 11mm of rain.

However, the wind and rain was punctuated by patches of sunshine, as temperature reached a top of 14.7 degrees.

While many northern suburbs experienced hail storms, the hail was too small to cause damage, he said.

The State Emergency Service had received only 60 calls for assistance since midnight with no spike in weather-related calls, a SES spokeswoman said.

Mr Halfpenny said the rain would continue on Sunday evening, but would most likely clear by Monday, with only a slight chance of rain forecast.

"There will be cold southerly winds, and intermittent showers for the rest of the day," he said.
